Friday 1 February 2008 I am quite the emotional buyer. Especially when it comes to things I don't really need, things I buy on impulse.A prime example: Notebooks. I am obsessed with them. I have three to four journals I use on a whenever-I-feel-like-writing-on-you basis. My current favorite is the one my sister got for me during her trip to the States--it has different colored blank pages, perfect for writing, doodling, ranting and the occasional impulse to sketch an object, person or scene I suddenly find fascinating. I love the cover--different colored passport stamps set against a black canvass binding. It screams wanderlust. I love it. I write on it mostly when I'm in a happy mood so when reading it, you'd probably think I'm the most carefree person in the planet. The world is my oyster. I also call it my denial notebook. The next one I bought a few years back in Fully Booked--not much to look at but I fell in love with the squared pages. It reminds me of my grade school math notebooks, which contained more doodles than numbers, equations, fractions, etc etc. It also brings to mind one of my favorite movies of all time, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the movie that actually prompted me to look for one in the first place. Jim Carrey was sketching Kate Winslet on the train and he was using a squared notebook. I know. I am a sucker to commercialism. Anyway. Moving on... I love RED. It's probably my favorite color of all time, which is why I couldn't help but feel the need to buy this one: I love the Chinese floral print--so elegant. I was still struggling (not really) to fill up the Eternal Sunshine squared journal when I happened to find this notebook during one of my visits to Fully Booked Rockwell. It was begging to be bought. Gullible emotional buyer that I am, I succumbed to temptation. I told myself I would only use it after I filled up Eternal Sunshine but the next day, I started writing there. Later, I started doing crazy things to it. Like this unused starbucks coupons collage: After I made the mistake of doing a bit of oil painting on it, I kept it hidden on my drawer. The smell was...well, I couldn't take it. Pungent oil fumes mingled with perfume--a futile attempt on my part to cover up the smell of paint. I tore up some of the blank pages and used it for writing grocery lists, reminders and even an occasional note to some friends. This next one's the oldest of the bunch. Wake up and smell the coffee. I bought it in A Different Bookstore in Eastwood right before I went on my 2005 US vacation so it's mostly filled with accounts of my misadventures in the States, which is why I love it so much and can't bring myself to leave it in my "secret junk box" in Davao where I keep all my journals since grade school. Finally, the latest purchase. Ever since I started doing Artist's Way, I've been using this one for my daily morning pages. FYI, morning pages as defined in Artist's Way are three pages worth of longhand first streams-of-consciousness writing. It's the one I would probably kill to have back if ever I find myself losing it. Plenty of blackmailable material here. Well, not really. No accounts of me poisoning someone. But as it's an outlet of all the negative thoughts I've been carrying with me lately, it's nothing but melodramatic and will definitely embarrass me to the ends of the earth. So there. Fin. Ah wait, I want a moleskine notebook. The small squared classic notebook, one you can carry around with you in your pocket. Or in my case, my big black bag. Perfect for jotting down story ideas when I'm out wreaking havoc in Manila. FRIENDS, malapit na birthday ko. Labels: notebooks
